課程概述 |
Course Description
This is a practical course in Chinese to English translation for Master's students in the translation track, covering techniques of translation of various text types. |
|
課程目標 |
Course Objectives
1. Eliminate basic grammatical errors, develop a sense of idiomatic English.
2. Apply syntactical, literary, generic and rhetorical analysis to the text types of CE translation.
3. Develop a sense of professionalism, which is to say principled survival strategies and an understanding of the role a CE translator plays in society. |

Requirements:
1. Be on time (especially if you want to take the quizzes worth 20% of your final mark).
2. No web surfing (put your phones/computers at the front if you can’t stay off FB).
3. No plagiarism (rewarded with an instant fail in the course).
4. Open a Dropbox account, because the course materials are in a Dropbox folder.

Quizzes at the beginning and end of class; Midterm and final |

The quiz will be on whatever we did the previous week, and at first will be repeated at the beginning and end of class, until you all achieve perfection, at which point we may drop the quizzes or base them on something else. The midterm will cover homeworks up to the midterm, the final from the midterm to the final. |

Weekly translations |
40% |
10 weekly translations, on time, accurate, in good English. We will do a variety of authentic translation cases. You'll take charge one of the weeks. |

Self-monitoring |
30% |
EAT, midterm and final report (including two analyses, of a certain error and a certain technique). |
